How to make wise decisions
“She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not”… Has she ever plucked the petals off a yellow daisy one by one, wishing the last one would give her the most important answer of her life? This is an unreliable way to make correct decisions!
That’s how insecure are the decisions we make guided by feelings. Wise decisions are made with an understanding of God’s will, and God delights in revealing his will to those who are willing to do it.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)
“What are the decisions that please God?”
God bless the…
- Decisions he initiates (Proverbs 4:11)
- Decisions that are in accordance with his word (Psalms 119: 133)
- Decisions that accomplish his purpose (Philippians 2:13)
- Decisions that depend on his divine strength (Philippians 4:13)
- Decisions that glorify him (1 Corinthians 10:31)
“So whether you eat or drink or do anything else, do it all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
“How does God reveal his will?”
God reveals his will primarily through…
- His Holy Spirit from him (John 16:13)
- His word of him revealed from him in the Bible (Psalms 119: 105)
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalms 119:105)
Eight tests to make the right decisions
- Scriptural Test—“Has God said anything about this in his word?” (2 Timothy 3:16)
- Test of secrecy—“Would I be embarrassed if everyone knew what my decision was?” (Proverbs 11:3)
- Follow-up test—“What if everyone followed my example?” (1 Timothy 4:12)
- Test of the Holy Spirit—“Am I guided by external pressure, or do I allow the Spirit to guide me?” (Galatians 1:10)
- Stumbling test—“Could it be a stumbling block for someone?” (Romans 14:21)
- Peace of mind test—“Have I prayed and feel peace in this decision?” (Philippians 4:6,7)
- Test of sanctification—“Will this decision keep me from growing Christlike?” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
- Supreme test—“Does my decision glorify God?” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
“Walk as children of light…proving what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8, 10)
Causes of confusion when we try to know the will of God
- Lacking pure motives (James 4:3)
- Not wanting to surrender our will to God (Matthew 26:39)
- Do not seek God’s will through his word (Psalms 119: 105)
- Not repenting of our sins (Psalm 66:18)
- Not praying continually and earnestly (James 1:5)
- Not waiting patiently for God’s time to come (Hebrews 6:15)
- Not being willing to suffer so that Christ may be glorified (1 Peter 4:1,2)
